Q. When do you tap the ball and when do you perform a rollball?

A. The tap is taken at the mark and the defending team must go back 10 metres from the mark until the ball has been tapped. It is taken by placing the ball on the ground on the mark, releasing it with both hands, tapping the ball with the foot a distance of not more than 1 metre and retrieving the ball cleanly. THe tap is taken when:

Forward Pass

Touch and Pass

Rollball performed off the mark

Performing a rollball before a touch is made

Defenders offside at the rollball (5 metres)

Defenders offside at the tap (10 metres)

Deliberately delaying play

More than allowed number of players on the field

Incorrect substitution

Falsely claiming touch

Using more than minimum force to make a touch

Misconduct and inappropriate behaviour

A rollball is a means of restarting play. It must be performed on the mark while FACING THEIR OPPONENT'S defending scoreline and rolling the ball backwards between their legs a distance of not more than 1 metre. A rollball can also be performed by placing the ball on the mark and STEPPING OVER the ball. It is performed when:

When a touch is made

Change of possession after the 6th touch

Change of possession when the ball is dropped on the ground

Change of possession because of infringement by an attacking player at penalty or tap

Change of possession when the dummy half/ acting half is touched whilst in possession of the ball

Change of possession when the player in possession runs out of the sideline

When directed by the referee

Q. When can players on the defending team advance upon a rollball?

A. Players on the defending team are not allowed to move forward of the 5 metre position UNTIL THE HALF HAS MADE CONTACT WITH THE BALL. Only if there is no acting half in position, can defenders advance from the 5 metre mark once the ball has left the hands of the player in position.

Q. If the player in possession falls to the ground and the ball touched the ground but the player has not released the ball (or lost control or possession of the ball) is that considered a dropped ball?

A. No. Play goes on until the player is touched following which a rollball is performed WITHOUT change of possession unless it is the 6th touch.
